Bowen Fluorescence from Companion Stars in X-ray Binaries
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper will review a new technique of detecting companion stars in LMXBs and X-ray transients in outburst using the Bowen fluorescence lines at λλ4634-4640. These lines are very efficiently reprocessed in the atmospheres of the companion stars, and thereby provide estimates of the K2 velocities and mass functions. The method has been applied to Sco X-1, X1822-371 and GX339-4 which, in the latter case, provides the first dynamical evidence for the presence of an accreting black hole. Preliminary results from a VLT campaign on V801 Ara, V926 Sco and XTE J1814-338 are also presented.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries
In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...
متن کاملM ar 2 00 3 Bowen Fluorescence from the Companion Star in X 1822 - 371
– 2 – We present a clear evidence for the motion of the companion star in the Low Mass X-Ray Binary (LMXB) X1822-371. We detect NIII λ4640 emission moving in antiphase with the radial velocity curve of the neutron star and produced on the X-ray heated hemisphere of the donor star. From the motion of this feature we derive a lower limit to the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the companion star...
متن کاملMultiplicity of X-Ray Selected T Tauri Stars in Chamaeleon
We report on a multiplicity survey of a sample of X-ray selected young stars in the Chamaeleon association. We used speckle-interferometry and direct imaging to find companions in the separation range 0.13 to 6. After correction for chance alignment with background stars, we find a multiplicity (number of binaries or multiples divided by number of systems) of (14.0 ± 4.3)% and a companion star ...
متن کاملA propelling neutron star in the enigmatic Be-star γ Cassiopeia
γ Cassiopeia (γ Cas), is known to be a binary system consisting of a Be-type star and a low-mass (M ∼ 1M ) companion of unknown nature orbiting in the Be-disc plane. Here, we apply the quasi-spherical accretion theory on to a compact magnetized star and show that if the low-mass companion of γ Cas is a fast spinning neutron star, the key observational signatures of γ Cas are remarkably well rep...
متن کاملHydrogen deficient donors in low-mass X-ray binaries
A number of X-ray binaries (neutron stars or black holes accreting from a companion star) have such short orbital periods that ordinary, hydrogen rich, stars do not fit in. Instead the mass-losing star must be a compact, evolved star, leading to the transfer of hydrogen deficient material to the neutron star. I discuss the current knowledge of these objects, with focus on optical spectroscopy.
